Stithians Show - Information for Visitors to the Show

Cornwall's biggest one day Show - July 12 2010

Young Farmers' Club Marquee

This section is operated by and for Young Farmers Club members. There is a YFC cattle section but from 2002 onwards it has been operated in conjunction with the cattle section. The display section in the YFC tent encompasses craft, cookery and floral art. There are trophies for the club winning most points overall and also a cup for the individual with the most points amongst lots of other trophies to be won. There is also a section for ex Young Farmer Members so old rivals can compete again, like they used to, for the ex YFC trophy.

Exhibits in the YFC competitions at Stithians ShowThe clubs that generally enter at Stithians Show are Helston & St Keverne, Praze, Falmouth, Threemilestone and St Columb but the classes are open to every club in Cornwall and more entries are always encouraged, so if your club has never entered before and would like to please feel free to contact Nicola.

We are always open to suggestions for classes and ways to improve the Young Farmers Section so please feel free to get in contact with your ideas.

Nicola Chegwidden who is the YFC Section Secretary for the show is also the current County Chairman of the Federation so will be on hand to answer any questions that you might have about Cornwall YFC.  Cornwall YFC also have the charity stand for an outside organisation this year and will be organising a tombola to raise money for the Sapphire Nurse, through Epilepsy Support for Young People in Cornwall & Epilepsy Action, a specialist nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital who specialises in helping people in Cornwall who suffer from Epilepsy.

Funding for the Sapphire Nurse, Mary Parret, is very limited and the resources that she needs are very difficult to acquire from National Health Service so I am aiming to raise money during my year to support Mary’s work and provide the vital equipment that she needs.  The charity isn’t heard of as much as some other charities and as well as raising money for the charity I would like to raise the profile of the charity and epilepsy so that people know what to do if someone is having a seizure.  Mary will also be on the charity stand at the show to answer any questions or concerns that anyone might have about epilepsy.

Ÿ  Epilepsy is the tendency to have recurrent seizures.
Ÿ
There are around 40 different types of seizure and a person may have more than one type.
Ÿ
Epilepsy can affect anyone, at any age and from any walk of life.
Ÿ
456,000 or one in every 131 people in the UK has epilepsy.
Ÿ
Epilepsy is a neurological condition.
Ÿ
Only 52 per cent of people with epilepsy in the UK are seizure-free. It is estimated that 70 percent could be seizure free with the right treatment.
Ÿ
One in 20 people will have a single seizure at some time in their life.
Ÿ
Many people who develop epilepsy below the age of 20 will ‘grow out of it' in adult life.
Ÿ
Many people with epilepsy are still discriminated against due to ignorance about the condition.
Ÿ
Epilepsy is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act.
Ÿ
The vast majority of people with epilepsy can take part in the same activities as everyone else, with the help of simple safety measures where appropriate.
Ÿ  People who have been seizure free for a year can re-apply for their driving licence.

The Young Farmers is all about working together, making friends, having fun, learning and competitions. And remember you don’t have to be a Farmer to be a Young Farmer!

Helston & St Keverne YFC won overall last year, will it be your club this year???  The challenge is on!!!
