Stithians is a village in West Cornwall, situated about 9 miles West of Truro. Other local towns include Helston (9 miles to the West), Redruth (5 miles N.E.), Camborne (6 m. N.W.), Penryn (5 m S.) and Falmouth (7 m. S.) The population of Stithians is just over 2000 persons. Formerly the main industries were Granite and Agriculture. The latter is still important, but very depressed at present. Most inhabitants of Stithians work in the local towns or are retired. The village has a School, Village Hall, Parish Church, Methodist Chapel, Post Office, Shop/Newsagents, Butchers, General Merchants/Filling Station, Ladies Hairdresser, Public House, Playing Field with Children's' Amusements, Tennis, Bowls and Sports Ground, Cricket Ground, Boarding Kennels and Mens Institute. There are also local Electrical Contractors, Electronic and Electrical Goods Repairers, Plumbers and Builders. You can even hire a Disco Service. The parish of Stithians also includes other Public Houses, Restaurants, Shops and Post Offices in the more outlying areas. The Stithians Reservoir has Trout Fishing and a Wind Surfing Club. For its' size, Stithians is one of the most progressive villages that one can find, with over 40 clubs, societies and other activities listed in the local village directory. Village Organisations - Among the organisations in the village are - The Annual Show, described elsewhere in these pages. The Silver Band, which has for many years given twice weekly concerts in the Gyllingdune Gardens at Falmouth throughout the Summer, and has won awards at Music Festivals throughout the country. The Male Voice Choir, which has won awards at Music Festivals throughout the country and abroad. The Ladies Choir, which has won awards at Music Festivals throughout the country. There are also a Rugby Team, Cricket Team, Bowls Teams, Pigeons Club, Billiards/Snooker Teams and Walking Clubs. The Stithians Times - a village newspaper which is produced every two months. Other organisations - Women's Institute, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Youth Club, Playgroup, Mother and Toddlers Group, School of Dance, Keep Fit, Evergreens, The Twinning Association (Stithians is twinned with the village of Ploërdut in Brittany). |
